Department of Medical Entomology and Vector Control (MEVC)

Welcome from the Head of Department,

Dear Students/ Applicants;

You are cordially invited to join our faculty, staff and current undergraduate (Bachelor of Science, BSc) and postgraduate (Master of Science, MSc; and Doctorate, PhD) students in the School of Health, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), Shiraz, Iran. Upon admission to our department, you will enjoy the opportunity to promote your knowledge and experiences in the educative, research and technologic development, implementation and evaluation of field and laboratory-based practices to enhance and procure health standards in the field of Vector-Borne Diseases (VBD’s) and effectively improve community health through joint ventures. Academic staff in our department come from various scientific disciplines including molecular, taxonomic, toxicological, biotechnological and forensic entomology. Our research interests encompass a wide area of medically-important issues such as zoonoses, endemic VBD, epidemiology of infectious VBD, immune-pathology of VBD, venomous arachnids, myiases, maggot therapy, etc. Faculty staff commonly supervise research proposals providing venues for student involvement in activities leading to patents, ISI papers, and inventions. We thus welcome your early application. Every year, national and international congresses on VBD’s are held in our country within which you can share and publicize your ideas and research agenda.

Following graduation, you will benefit from excellent job opportunities to engage in including private entrepreneurships, state agencies, health-associated institutions and networks, etc.

We are determined to facilitate your admission and look forward in anticipation of your follow-up to meet your career goals.

Yours Ever: MD Moemenbellah-Fard, PhD (King’s College London)

Full Professor and Head of Department of MEVC,

The MEVC group has been established as an official department in the chart of School of Health, SUMS, since 1992. Its collaborations simultaneously started in education and research to all schools’ departments within SUMS. The master (MSc) degree program began in 2007 with >50 students being graduated so far. The bachelor (BSc) degree course was initiated in 2016 with >30 students, while our PhD program started in 2017 with 4 students. The MEVC department is the second most prominent faculty in Iran.

To implement the twelfth clause of the 43rd. law of Islamic Republic of Iran's constitution based on community health and in consideration of the fact that a remarkable number of known endemic diseases in Iran are transmitted by arthropods including insects of importance in clinical medicine, and despite measures adopted in the last few decades to eliminate and/or diminish parasite reservoirs; with the exception of Guinea Worm Disease; no other diseases could by far be eradicated. There is thus a need to educate individuals who can be actively involved in these fields. The curricula of Master of Science (M.Sc.), and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) as well as Doctorate (Ph.D.) in MEVC have all been designed to provide this human work force.

Education Goals

-          To train students acquire the necessary skills and competencies to manage, implement and evaluate vector control protocols and be involved in promotion of community-based medical entomology awareness as well as the advancement of insect science through research.

Research Goals

-          Students’ empowerment in design and skills of research, publication and mentorship.

-          Students’ capability in design and trial of applied research in medical entomology.

-          Students’ skills in design and implementation of research in VBD and vector control.
