Message from the Head of Department

Dear Students/Applicants,

On behalf of the Faculty, staff and current students in the Department of Environmental Health Engineering, I welcome you to the School of Health at SUMS.

As a graduate student in our department, you will have an opportunity to broaden your knowledge and skills in the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions to promote healthy behaviors and make your contribution effectively to improve health situation and wellbeing of the populations i.e. children, youths, women, & elderly people. Faculty members in the department come from diverse academic backgrounds and our research interests encompass a broad array of important topics including, Water quality and treatment, Waste water treatment, Solid waste collection and disposal, Air Pollution, Waste Biotechnology, Bioremediation, Soil pollution, Environmental Health Impact Assessment and etc. Faculty members in the department have supported research projects that provide opportunities for student involvement, and we welcome your participation.

After graduation, you will find opportunities to use your education to make an impact on health promotion and aging in a variety of settings including government agencies and private section, as well as health care settings, and academic institutions, among others.

History

Department of Environmental Health Engineering

The Department of Environmental Health Engineering was founded in 1988 and is now one of the basic science departments at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in the School of Health. The Department of Environmental Health Engineering currently consists of 7 full-time faculty members. Currently, the department has 111 Undergraduate students, 25 M.Sc. students and 6 PhD candidates in Environmental Health Engineering.

Educational Goals of Department of Environmental Health Engineering

Training of people with the ability to acquire the necessary skills and competencies to design, implement and evaluate education programs and environmental health protection (water, wastewater, soil and air) in accordance with the needs of the community as well as the production of science through research.

1-       Air Pollution Laboratory Equipments

 

Leland Legacy 5 to 15 L/min:

Applications: The personal-size Leland Legacy® air sampling pump offers flows from 5 to 15 L/min, PC-programmability, and up to 24-hour run times for personal or area sampling of low-level contaminants. The pump is ideal for use with impactors, low-volume PUF tubes, filter cassettes, and spore traps.

 

MicroFlow™ Microbiological Air Sampler:

Applications: The Microbiological Air Sampler is used for sampling biocontaminants (bacteria, molds, spores, fungi, pollen, etc.) in any production or environmentally controlled area. MicroFlow™ allows to verify & quantify microorganism presence.

 

 

 

High Volume Air Samplers:

Applications: High volume air samplers are used for the collection of airborne particulate matter in ambient air.  They are available for the collection of Total Suspended particulates (TSP), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10µm (PM10), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5µm (PM2.5), and semi-volatile organic compounds and pesticides (PUF).

Universal PCXR45 to 5000 ml/min:

Applications: The Universal PCXR4 personal or area air sampling pump features a 5 to 5000 ml/min flow range, timer, flow fault, and up to 12-hour run times for sampling particulates and gases/vapors. The pump is ideal for use with sorbent tubes, filter cassettes, size-selective samplers, sample bags, and impingers.

 

2-       Chemistry Laboratory Equipments

 

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC):

  

Applications: High-performance liquid chromatography, is used to separate, identify, and quantify each component in a mixture.HPLC has been used for manufacturing (e.g. during the production process of pharmaceutical and biological products), research (e.g. separating the components of a complex biological sample, or of similar synthetic chemicals from each other), and medical (e.g. detecting vitamin D levels in blood serum) purposes, and detecting different components in environmental (water, wastewater, air).

  

 

 

Ion Chromatography (IC) (Metrohm, 850 professional IC):

Applications: It is often used in protein purification, water and wastewater analysis, and quality control.

 

Polarograph (Metrohm, 797 VA computrace):

  

Applications: The majority of the chemical elements can be identified by polarographic analysis. Polarography is also used to identify numerous types of organic compounds and to study chemical equilibria and rates of reactions in solutions and can measure metals as much as ppm and ppb by voltammetry.

 

 

 

                    

Spectrophotometer DR 5000:

  

Applications: A spectrophotometer is commonly used for the measurement of transmittance or reflectance of solutions, transparent or opaque solids, such as polished glass, or gases.

 

3-      Microbiology Laboratory Equipments

 

 

Centrifuge, Universal , American: 

       

Applications: One of the medical diagnostic laboratories that uses its motor power to separate and separate substances in solutions in a liquid. Like serum and plasma.

Applications:Observation of microorganisms by a factor called separation

 

Oven, Germany, Memert:      

 

 

Applications: For the sterilization of tools and devices resistant to heat, including glass plates, pipettes, test tubes, dental instruments.

 

Laminar Flow, Jal Takhiz - Model JTLVC2: 

 

Application:  A chamber-like device with movable glass and a vent and lighting system, some of which contain a UV lamp to sterilize indoor air when working with microbial agents and cultivated environments. This compartment also has a lamp and a tap and a flame.

pH Meter,   Swiss, Metrohm 827:

  

Applications: To measure the acidity or fluidity of the liquids.

 

Freezer _80 °C, Italy, KW:

 

                                                                                                          

 Applications: Laboratory freezer is referred to as a chamber that is used to measure, monitor and maintain the test specimen at a temperature below zero.

 

Cooling shaker incubator, Jal Takhiz - Model JTSL20:  

                                  

 

   

Applications: Providing a suitable temperature for growth as well as to stir the culture medium. 

 

Water bath, Germany, Memert:

  

 

Applications: As a fertilizing medium, as well as melting cultivation environments.

 

 

 

Autoclave:

 

 

Applications: Sterilize all laboratory and culture media before use and microbial culture media, etc. by wet heat.

 

Incubator, Germany, Memert:

  

Applications: Providing the moisture and heat needed to grow bacteria after the cultivation.
