Message from the Head of Department

Dear Students/Applicants,

On behalf of the Faculty, staff and current students in the Department of Health Promotion and Gerontology, I welcome you to the School of Health at SUMS.

As a graduate student in our department, you will have an opportunity to broaden your knowledge and skills in the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions to promote healthy behaviors and make your contribution effectively to improve health situation and wellbeing of the populations i.e. children, youths, women, & elderly people. Faculty members in the department come from diverse academic backgrounds and our research interests encompass a broad array of important topics including, Work-based Health Promotion, Education Issues in Health, Pediatric Health Education, Aging Health, Adult Education, Clinical & Social Psychology, Health Sociology, Social & Health Statistics, Social Gerontology, Aging in Place, Environmental Gerontology, Health Literacy & Theories, Mobile Health, Social Marketing on Health, High Risk Behaviors in Adolescents, Physical Activity of Women & Older Adults, Aging Minority Groups, Rural Gerontology, and Mental Health of Specific Groups. Faculty members in the department have supported research projects that provide opportunities for student involvement, and we welcome your participation.

After graduation, you will find opportunities to use your education to make an impact on health promotion and aging in a variety of settings including government agencies and private section, as well as health care settings, and academic institutions, among others.

History

Division of Health Promotion

The Department of Health Education & Promotion was founded in 1960 and is now one of the basic science departments at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in the School of Health. The department is in charge of instructing students in Medicine, Nurse, midwifery, Management and Public Health. This department also offers programs leading to M.Sc. degrees in health education. The Department of Health education & Promotion currently consists of 3 full-time faculty members. The faculties offer courses in fundamental and current topics in theory and Model in health education & promotion as well as provide opportunities for research in the general areas of health-related behavior and lifestyle in different population groups, Need assessment and survey studies, Design and trials on theory-based intervention in education and health promotion, health literacy, community participation and media-based interventions in health promotion. Currently, the department has 28 M.Sc. students and 5 PhD candidates in Health Promotion. Additionally, the division of Aging Health has 18 MSc. Students in Gerontology and Aging Health.

Division of Aging Health & Gerontology

Considering the growth of the elderly population in recent years and the need to train trained and efficient human resources in the field of comprehensive care for the elderly in terms of physical, psychological, social, economic, managerial, educational and research needs of society in order to improve the quality of services and elderly health, the group's efforts and follow-up, with the launch of the Aging Health in Master degree, have been approved since 2015, and over the past two years, 12 applicants have been admitted. It should be noted that the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and the Dept. of Health Education & Promotion are the only group and university in the southern region of the country, which has succeeded in setting up a master's degree in Aging Health & Gerontology.

Vision and Mission

Educational Goals of Division of Health Promotion

Training of people with the ability to acquire the necessary skills and competencies to design, implement and evaluate education programs and health promotion in accordance with the needs of the community as well as the production of science through research.

1-      Empowerment of faculty members and students in the design and implementation skills of research and publication of research results

2-      Design and trial of applied research in the field of promoting healthy life style and life in work environments

3-      Design and trial of applied research in the field of lifestyle promoting health and preventing patients in different social groups

Training of trained and efficient human resources in the field of comprehensive care for the elderly in terms of physical, psychological, social, economic, managerial, educational and research needs of the community in order to improve the quality of services and health of the elderly.
